bird box

Ok, we admit, the majority of this piece, the block part, is real wood (oak to be exact)- BUT the coolness part is the twig that sticks out- and that is cast aluminum! This beautiful modernist bird box is designed by FredriksonStallard for Thorten Van Elten. You can contact Smallpond to find a retailer here in the states that carries it.

Mandolina Wine

So last night I had the most delicious wine for a warm summer evening - Mandolina Barbera 2003. It was a refreshing rose from Santa Barbara, CA. Pairing perfectly with the spinach and mushroom pizza from Whole Foods, it's noteworthy for the faux bois on the label's beautiful mandolina.

ps. thanks to eric and kiyoka eto for bringing us this yummy wine!

four logs

These versatile screeprinted "LOGS" by Dean Van Dis are perfect for the wall or to create a faux fireplace of your own. They've been featured on several sites including D*S, and Swissmiss. We recently caught up with Dean and asked him a few questions about his Four Logs Project:

What was the inspiration for doing four logs?
The original four LOGS were made as a background prop for a project in a photography course in college. This was in 1991. They were cut out of mat board and hand painted to look like real logs. They have been hanging in every house I have lived in since.

What are the pieces made out of?
Masonite for now.

What do you love about woodgrain?
The repetitive organic pattern.

What other products do you forsee in the future?
I want to have the four LOGS pattern on cheap china. Maybe as a border?

What's next for you?
Back to work as a commercial photographer until a new idea strikes my fancy.

Thanks Dean! For more info, visit www.fourLOGS.com.

SBIG: bathroom accessories

It's amazing what they can faux up with resin. This collection of bathroom accessories is from the National Wildlife Federation. The SBIG part for me is the tissue box holder where they've updated what probably would've been detailed animal figures with green silhouttes.

loss of memory

So very honestly, we thought we had already posted these two brilliant pieces, but it seems between the two of us, it slipped our minds. (BOO!) Thanks to Janel from AT: Chicago for the reminder...
Okay, I remember now, we didn't think these birch wood lamps were faux bois because the imprint looks so real. Don't you think they look real? But even when Jon figured out that they are actually covered in silk, we still forgot. They generously come in a group of three, but are sold out at the moment. Looks like you can preorder.

This Sherwood table is so elegant and still very modern.. very similar to the Barkely table which is why we probably slipped on this one too! ok, enough excuses ;(

woodgrain backdrops...

Randomly came across this site (with what I'm sure was a completely unintentional faux bois name- "stumps") while looking for some party supplies and saw these amazing woodgrain finds....
woodgrain gossamer- not really sure what gossamer is- but isn't it some sort of fabric?

corrugated paper with woodgrain printed on it- in dark woodgrain and light- for all you crafty folks...think of the possiblilities!!!

And finally this themed decor "set"....ok, now it looks cheezy all together- but I'm totally eye-ing the corrugated logs that make up the pier... I don't know why.... but... there's some sort of amazing home decor moment just waiting to happen there... (hehe) love the sassy model doin' the diva pose too...

SBIG: woodgrain cart

SBIG friday again! We recently posted about woodgrain car kits that are available for a multitude of cars (we're still trying to get over the thought of a "woody-ized" Beetle) but why stop there? Well, the folks over at Buggies Unlimited think every kind of vehicle should be given the chance to be "woody-ized". They offer several faux wood kits for those that travel by golf cart. I'm particularily fond of the steering wheel coverplate that's just aching to be customized... have a great friday!

"Forest Faces" by Woods

My first inclination was to categorize these into the "SBIG" category, but I gotta admit that something about these funny faces transcends your typical good/bad kitsch factor, and they just kinda make me smile. These obviously need to go on the right type of tree, but they totally bring me back to those classic fantasy movies or tv shows, where the trees come to life. Like in Wizard of OZ or H.R.Puffnstuff... They're borderline scary... but I still kinda like them.
I like the ones with the mustache, since trees are wise, y'know...The other cool thing is that some of them let you put birdfood in the mouth for the birds! I saw these while at Bed Bath & Beyond, but you can also check them out here...or here.

fun thing- woodgrain computer

Here's another fun idea to do with woodgrain contact paper- We saw this image on Margaret Lyon's Flickr page. She was at a cafe and saw that someone contacted paper-ed their laptop and celphone!- notice the amazing craftmanship! We haven't tried this yet, so we don't have any other pics, but if any of you decide to try this- please share with us your results!!! (thanks Margaret for the image!)

SBIG? A&W new vintage bottle

This could be considered bad, but I strangely find it good! Over the weekend, kinda had an impulse buy at the cash register and picked up a bottle of A&W rootbeer. Haven't had it in ages, and the thought of rootbeer sounded really good- but what do my its(k)notwood eyes notice right away? They have changed the bottle and label art! Apparently this happened sometime late last year. According to the website, this is called the "A&W New Vintage bottle"- They went back to their "roots" (pun intended) using the faux wood/barrel look, and made the bottle resemble a glass one- but it's still plastic. I appreciate the kitchy woodgrain pattern, and it tastes good too!
